In this webinar Julie Thallon, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Patients Association, and Trustee Prof Alf Collins explores the role of shared decision making in healthcare, emphasising it as a fundamental aspect of good care.

Alf outlines a five-phase process: building trust, supporting patients in telling their stories, clarifying decisions, discussing goals and preferences, and making decisions collaboratively. He also highlights the importance of developing relationships with patients, particularly in primary care, where continuity facilitates stronger connections.

In contrast, secondary care presents challenges due to shorter patient interactions, making it essential for healthcare professionals to quickly establish rapport. Julie discusses challenges in secondary care, where the fast-paced environment can impede meaningful connections.

Both agreed that investing time in understanding patients' narratives enhances the quality of care and fosters more compassionate, effective healthcare.
